Most of this castle has been destroyed, including the famous hall, which was originally decorated with wall paintings illustrating the conquest of Syria by the First Crusade. These may have been made, or at least designed, by artists from the Crusader Principality of Antioch in northern Syria, brought to Thebes by Nicholas' wife, Mary of Antioch. This reconstruction is based upon written evidence, upon comparable but surviving Crusader architecture from the same period, and upon late 13th-century manuscript illustrations of various sieges during the First Crusade.
