However, relatively little is known about the mechanisms of attachment to surfaces under anaerobic reactor conditions. The adhesive capacities of bacteria are exceptional; their surface structures appear to allow some control over adhesion while their small dimensions ensure that they are not subject to many naturally-occurring shear forces. The outer layers of bacteria are negatively charged, as are most of the surfaces to which they adhere. The range and intensity of the repulsive forces generated by these surface charges as the microorganism and the surface converge will be governed by the ionic strength of the medium, the energy level of the cell, pH, and any potentially adsorbing ions present; the repulsion will probably not reduce to zero under most conditions [2].

Shermanii. It is generally observed that those bacteria which can metabolise glucose can also utilise lactate, although lactate-utilisers are not necessarily also glucose-utilisers. The propionibacteria prefer glucose as their source of carbon and energy, but Megasphaera spp. cannot metabolise this sugar, and utilise lactate. In an animal waste digester, lactate-fermenting bacteria were reported in numbers of 3 x 104 per ml of digester fluid [3]. They are regarded as important in anaerobic fermentations; one of the lactate-utilisers frequently isolated from anaerobic reactor fluids is Desulfovibrio [3, 40, 41].

Plastic deformation results when the solid is viscoelastic, and elastic energy can be dissipated while the solids remain contiguous. Major differences in contact strength between the solids are manifested by these two types. Solids such as cells, which undergo plastic deformation on contact with surfaces, are more strongly attached, as the net adhesive force between elastic solids at a specific separation distance between the surfaces approximates to that value for the case of zero deformation [14].
